In a study published in Neuropathology and Applied Neurobiology, researchers examined the brains of 34 heroin and methadone users who died at an average age of 26 years. Some of them died at 17. They compared their brains to the brains of 16 young people who died young but were not drug users. The examination found that drug abusers were up to three times more likely to have brain damage than those who do not use drugs. The young drug users brains appeared similar to those of much older people and the damage comparable to someone with Alzheimers disease. Damaged Nerve Cells in Heroin and Methadone Users Scientists at the University of Edinburgh studied the brains of the deceased intravenous drug abusers of heroin and methadone and compared them to the brains of young people who were not drug users. The damaged nerve cells were in the areas of the brain involved in learning, memory, and emotional well-being, and were similar to damage found in the early stages of Alzheimers disease. Our study shows evidence of an increased risk of brain damage associated with heroin and methadone use, which may be highest in the young when individuals are most likely to acquire the habit, said co-author Jeanne Bell Professor of Neuropathology. We found that the brains of these young drug abusers showed significantly higher levels of two key proteins associated with brain damage. In a previous study, we found out that drug abuse causes low-grade inflammation in the brain. Taken together, the two studies suggest that intravenous opiate abuse may be linked to premature aging of the brain, Bell said. How Heroin and Methadone Cause Brain Damage and Death The average age in these two groups in the study was only 26 years and included some drug abusers as young as 17. Tau protein, which in its soluble form is essential for communication and transport within brain cells, had become insoluble in some cells, causing nerve cell damage and death in selected areas of the brain, the authors reported. Other nerve cells showed an accumulation of the amyloid precursor protein, which suggests that protein transport had been disrupted and the nerve cell functions affected. This study shows that drug abuse can lead to a build-up of proteins, which cause severe nerve cell damage and death in essential parts of the brain. This is very worrying as there are strong indications that drug use, in particular opiates like heroin and methadone, has continued to rise in recent years, says Professor Bell. The drug abusers we looked at in the study sadly died at a young age, but there are many others who dont realize the long-term effects that these drugs may be causing.

These include the last five piano sonatas, the Missa solemnis, the Ninth Symphony, with its choral finale, and the last five string quartets. In the fall of 1826 Beethoven caught a serious cold, which developed into pneumonia. He died on March 26, 1827. At the time of his death and even now Beethoven is considered one of the top classical composers of all times, maybe even the best. A Biography of Civil War General Stonewall Jackson Stonewall Jackson - Early Life: Thomas Jonathan Jackson was born to Jonathan and Julia Jackson on January 21, 1824 at Clarksburg, VA (now WV). Jacksons father, an attorney, died when he was two leaving Julia with three small children. During his formative years, Jackson lived with a variety of relatives but spent the majority of time at his uncles mill in Jacksons Mills. While at the mill, Jackson developed a strong work ethic and sought out education when possible. Largely self-taught, he became an avid reader. In 1842, Jackson was accepted to West Point, but due to his lack of schooling struggled with the entrance exams. Stonewall Jackson - West Point Mexico: Due to his academic difficulties, Jackson began his academic career at the bottom of his class. While at the academy, he quickly proved himself a tireless worker as he endeavored to catch up to his peers. Graduating in 1846, he was able to achieve class rank of 17 out 59. Commissioned a second lieutenant in the 1st US Artillery, he was sent south to take part in the Mexican-American War. Part of Major General Winfield Scotts army, Jackson took part in the siege of Veracruz and the campaign against Mexico City. Two years later, following John Browns failed raid on Harpers Ferry, Governor Henry Wise asked VMI to provide a security detail for the abolitionist leaders execution. As the artillery instructor, Jackson and 21 of his cadets accompanied the detail with two howitzers. Stonewall Jackson - The Civil War Begins: With the election of President Abraham Lincoln and the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861, Jackson offered his services to Virginia and was made a colonel. Assigned to Harpers Ferry, he began organizing and drilling troops, as well as operating against the BO railroad. Assembling a brigade of troops recruited in and around the Shenandoah Valley, Jackson was promoted to brigadier general that June. Part of General Joseph Johnstons command in the Valley, Jacksons brigade was rushed east in July to aid in the First Battle of Bull Run. Stonewall Jackson - In the Valley: Having held the hill, Jacksons men played a role in the subsequent Confederate counterattack and victory. Promoted to major general on October 7, Jackson was given command of the Valley District with headquarters at Winchester. In January 1862, he conducted an abortive campaign near Romney with the goal of re-capturing much of West Virginia. That March, as Major General George McClellan began transferring Union forces south to the Peninsula, Jackson was tasked with defeating Major General Nathaniel Banks forces in the Valley as well as preventing Major General Irvin McDowell from approaching Richmond. Jackson opened his campaign with a tactical defeat at Kernstown on March 23, but rebounded to win at McDowell, Front Royal, and First Winchester, ultimately expelling Banks from the Valley. Concerned about Jackson, Lincoln order McDowell to assist and dispatched men under Major General John C. Frà ©mont. Though outnumbered, Jackson continued his string of success defeating Frà ©mont at Cross Keys on June 8 and Brigadier General James Shields a day later at Port Republic. Having triumphed in the Valley, Jackson and his men were recalled to the Peninsula to join General Robert E. Lees Army of Northern Virginia. Stonewall Jackson - Lee Jackson: Though the two commanders would form a dynamic command partnership, their first action together was not promising. As Lee opened the Seven Days Battles against McClellan on June 25, Jacksons performance dipped. Throughout the fighting his men were repeatedly late and his decision making poor. Having eliminated the threat posed by McClellan, Lee ordered Jackson to take the Left Wing of the army north to deal with Major General John Popes Army of Virginia. Moving north, he won a fight at Cedar Mountain on August 9 and later succeeded in capturing Popes supply base at Manassas Junction. Moving onto the old Bull Run battlefield, Jackson assumed a defensive position to await Lee and the Right Wing of the army under Major General James Longstreet. Attacked by Pope on August 28, his men held until they arrived. The Second Battle of Manassas concluded with a massive flank attack by Longstreet which drove Union troops from the field. Following the victory, Lee decided to attempt an invasion of Maryland. Dispatched to capture Harpers Ferry, Jackson took the town before joining the rest of the army for the Battle of Antietam on September 17. Largely a defensive action, his men bore the brunt of the fighting at the northern end of the field. Withdrawing from Maryland, Confederate forces regrouped in Virginia. On October 10, Jackson was promoted to lieutenant general and his command officially designated the Second Corps. When Union troops, now led by Major General Ambrose Burnside, moved south that fall, Jacksons men joined Lee at Fredericksburg. During the Battle of Fredericksburg on December 13, his corps succeeded in holding off strong Union assaults south of the town. With the end of the fighting, both armies remained in place around Fredericksburg for the winter. When campaigning resumed in the spring, the Union forces guided by Major General Joseph Hooker attempted to move around Lees left to attack his rear. This movement presented problems for Lee as he had sent Longstreets corps away to find supplies and was badly outnumbered. Fighting at the Battle of Chancellorsville began on May 1 in a thick pine forest known as the Wilderness with Lees men under heavy pressure. Meeting with Jackson, the two men devised a daring plan for May 2 which called for the latter to take his corps on a wide flanking march to strike at the Union right. This daring plan succeeded and Jacksons attack began rolling up the Union line late on May 2. Reconnoitering that night, his party was confused for Union cavalry and was hit by friendly fire. Struck three times, twice in the left arm and once in the right hand, he was taken from the field. His left arm was quickly amputated, but his health began to deteriorate as he developed pneumonia. After lingering for eight days, he died on May 10. In learning of Jacksons wounding, Lee commented, Give General Jackson my affectionate regards, and say to him: he has lost his left arm but I my right. Joel Patrick Courtney - Essay Example One of four children of working class parents, Courtney grew up in Beaverton, Oregon, near Portland. According to his older sister Dina McBride, he had an â€Å"idyllic† childhood (Tilkin 2009). By the time Courtney was eleven years old, he became involved with drugs and was sent to juvenile detention at 15. His sister also testified, during his trial for the Wilberger murder, that he had sexually assaulted her at least once. A cousin told investigators of four occasions when Courtney had attempted to sexually assault her when they were both teenagers. (He was between fourteen and nineteen years old, and she was twelve to seventeen years old.) The cousin never reported the attacks because she was afraid of him (Gazette Times, 2009). When Courtney was 19, he was convicted of sex abuse and attempted rape for attacking a teenager female friend while under the influence of alcohol and drugs. His sister reported that on the encouragement of his parents, he â€Å"settled down† (Tilkin, 2009) to the point that he was able to receive counseling. He got married in the early 1990s and had three children. He lived with his family near Albuquerque, New Mexico until April 2004, when they moved in with his brother- and sister-in-law in Portland. Courtney’s brother-in-law got him a job with his employer, a maintenance company. Courtney used a van owned by his employer to abduct Wilberger in Corvallis, Oregon, 85 miles south of Portland, at the end of May. In June, Courtney’s wife left him and returned to New Mexico; he followed her and he was arrested for a domestic disturbance. He was never charged, so after his release, he reconciled with his wife and moved in with his family in Rio Rancho, New Mexico (Gazette Times, 2009). In November, he kidnapped and raped a 22-year old University of New Mexico student, but she escaped and was able to identify Courtney as her attacker. He pleaded guilty and in 2007, was sentenced to 18 years of prison. Eventua lly, police was able to link Courtney to the Wilberger case and in spite of the lack of the body of the alleged victim, charged him with 19 counts of aggregated murder, kidnapping, sexual abuse, rape, and sodomy. In exchange for providing information about the location of Wilberger’s body, a plea bargain was made, and Courtney was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, sparing him from the death penalty. The deal also provided for Courtney to serve his sentence in his home state of New Mexico (Scrabner & Netter, 2009). Wilberger’s disappearance in 2004 was covered in the national media and was one of the most highly publicized murder trials in Oregon history (Moran, 2009). Wilberger, a devout Mormon whose boyfriend was serving as a missionary in Venezuela at the time, had completed her first year at Brigham Young University She was visiting and working for her sister in Corvallis at the time of her abduction. On the morning of May 24, 2004, she was last seen cleaning lamp posts in the parking lot of the apartment building her sister and brother-in-law managed, located on the edge of Oregon State University campus. Acquisition Rationale The acquisition came at a time when Thomson was facing a fall in demand in developed markets for television with CPTs and was moving more towards Flat-screen and Plasma Television. However, Videocon saw an opportunity in the emerging countries for CPTs and hence pursued with the acquisitio n. Besides, the acquisition gave Videocon, the access to advanced technology giving the company control over an R facility in Agnani, Italy. The major reasons behind this acquisition were:- Cost cuttingVideocon was better positioned to shift the activities to low-cost locations and also it could integrate the operations with the glass panel facility in India with the CPT manufacturing facilities acquired from Thomson S. A Videocon wanted to leverage its position in the existing parts of the business and this acquisition would give it a strong negotiation position and could reduce impact of glass pricing volatility. Videocon could also reduce the costs by upgrading and improving the existing production lines. Vertical Integration The acquisition helped Videocon in vertically integrating its existing glass-shell business where it had been enjoying substantially high margins. Videocon’s glass division had the largest glass shell plant in a single location.This gave the company a n unrivalled advantage in terms of economies of scale and a leadership position in the glass shell industry. The acquisition also gave Videocon a ready-market for its glass business and it was part of Videocon’s long-term strategy to have a global vertically-integrated manufacturing facility. Rationalization of Product Profile Videocon modified its product profile to cater to the changing market needs like moving away from very large size picture tubes to smaller ones. [6] Apart from the overall strategy Videocon also had a plan on the technological front. It wanted to improve the setup for the production line and line speed post-merger.Its focus was to increase sales while reducing the costs and thereby improving the productivity of the existing line. The company also wanted to foray in a big way into LCD panels back-end assembly On the sales front the company wanted to leverage on the existing clients of Thomson and build relation as a preferred supplier to maximise sales. Also, Videocon could benefit from OEM CTV business with the help of Videocon’s CTV division, invest for new models and introduction of new technologies. Thomson’s perspective In 2004 Thomson planned entry into the high-growth digital media and technology business. Also, Thomson wanted to exit consumer and electronics businesses as they were incurring significant losses.After sale of its TV business to Chinese group TCL, and Tubes to Videocon, Thomson divested from the audio/video accessories business which was the last unit of its consumer electronics business. The need to divest are quite evident from the losses that it incurred in these businesses particularly that the unit that it sold off to Videocon, the Optical Modules activity, and the Audio/Video & Accessories businesses which totalled around â‚ ¬749 million for 2005. Moreover Thomson had done some acquisitions that were in line with boosting their revenues in the following years. Other Competitors for the A cquisition When Videocon entered the race for the colour picture tubes manufacturing capacity of Thomson SA in November 2004, there were 16 other bidders.Videocon stood slim chances given the fact that it had to battle it out with players like LG,Philips, Samsung and Matsushita, Daewoo and several Chinese manufacturers but finally managed to close the deal. The deal catapulted Videocon into the No. 3 slot in the global pecking order for CPTs. An official of Videocon said on the deal † The word is out in the world that India and Indian companies are not just a good bet by themselves, but also a hedge against China. â€Å" Pre-merger negotiations The price that Thomson wanted for the deal was euro 240 million (Rs 1,248 Crore) and Videocon agreed to the same without much negotiations (Under the deal the debt continued to be of Thomson’s). A special purpose vehicle, Eagle Electronics was used to complete the acquisition. As a part of the acquisition, Thomson also agreed to acquire 13.   % stake in Videocon for 1250 Crore in which 10% was locked for the first three years. Thomson SA has divested the 3. 5% stake that was outside the lock-in clause to overseas institutional investors. For the remaining 10% Dhoots retained a right of first refusal(recently this 10% has been sold to the Dhoots). During the process of negotiations Videocon was less affected by the capital cost component. Dhoot believed that Thomson CPT’s losses arising out from high capital cost of its Mexican Plant could be reduced once the television market in India moved to bigger screen sizes and slims .Videocon could import those from its global factories and hence cut on the losses of Thomson. Pre-merger scenario analysisCPT industry is affected by many competitive factors such as change in the consumer preferences ,the product offer strategy of retailers, the progress made by alternative technology manufacturers ,capacity adjustment facility of competitors etc. Based on all of these factors there were two scenarios that emerged from the 2005 budget of Videocon. The first scenario is a conservative one. It mainly assumes Price pressures similar to those in the past(-8 to -12%),capacity reduction over a period of two years, a gradual shift to newer technologies like True Flat and good amount of growth for LCD makers. [pic] The second scenario is a more aggressive one in term of trends predicted.It assumes that the switch to TrueFlat would be faster, more overcapacity, more competition from LCD manufacturers and rising price strategy pressures in general. The second scenario obviously requires an industrial strategy which is more adapted to the environment. However even if the second scenario arises,Videocon believes there is an opportunity in the CRT business. Though it is very obvious that in the developed markets of the western world the demand is shifting towards the flat panel side(FPD it is expected to contribute 70% of TV market in these regions), in the emerging markets like BRIC CRT still holds fort. CRT holds a dominant 70% share in these markets.When translated into number of units the demand is more than 100 million units. As Videocon is primarily based in these countries, it hopes to harness the value of the Thomson acquisition in the coming years. Post merger situation (2010) Videocon has not been able to turn the plant around in Italy still. However it is getting support from the local government(which want to prevent job cuts) in form of grants. The government is in fact trying to set up a Greenfield venture in form of a LCD manufacturing facility in partnership with Videocon. The banks are also supporting Videocon and with help from all these quarters Videocon expects to turn around the plant in Italy.The Thomson plant has not turned around in Mexixo as well and in fact production has been reduced over there. In Poland,the situation is more promising and Videocon hopes that plant over there will get in black in the very near future. However the surprise has been in the Chinese market . Despite of facing a highly competitive market Videocon has managed to turn a plant around while the other is on its way. In China Videocon is adopting a different strategy for manufacturing CTVs as the local players dominate the market . It plans to supply these players by taking advantage of low-cost nature of mainland(the number targeted by it about 6 million CPTs).Role of local government in the acquired units The LCD television segment is one of the fastest in terms of growth rate in Italy. The compounded growth rate is projected to be around 70% in the next few years. Videocon in partnership with the local government is going for a Greenfield venture in this segment. The Italian central government is giving a euro 180 million grant whereas the regional authorities are giving a 40 million grant. Videocon would itself pitch in with about euro 300 million whereas bank loans would provide a further 700 million. In the Thomson plant located in China the local Chinese Government is the minority shareholder.When Videocon acquired Thomson’s CPT business, it also gained control of Thomson’s Mexican plants. However Videocon Industries has a view that it would expand in the country only if the government gives it enough incentives. Videocon is demanding a 25-30% cash benefits from the authorities who are currently ready to give only about 20%. Thomson’s exit from Videocon Thomson is looking to sell out its stake in Videocon (a 10 percent stake via GDRs) and in most likelihood it would be bought by Videocon itself. Thomson would be exiting at a loss as it had acquired the stake at around Rs 400 per share (approximately equal to $10 per share). The deal is expected to happen at current market prices.Videocon’s GDR is currently traded at around $5. 06 on the Luxembourg Stock Exchange. On the Bombay stock exchange its trading around Rs 150 against the 52 week high of Rs 8 68 in Jan 2008. Another point to be noted is that this won’t attract the market regulator’s â€Å"creeping acquisition† norm which comes into force once they acquire more than 5% stake,as the deal would be an overseas one. Gibbons V. Ogden (1824) - 989 Words

In America s time there have been many great men who have spent their lives creating this great country. Men such as George Washington, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson fit these roles. They are deemed America s founding fathers and laid the support for the most powerful country in history. However, one more man deserves his name to be etched into this list. His name was John Marshall, who decided case after case during his role as Chief Justice that has left an everlasting mark on today s judiciary, and even society itself. Through Cases such as Marbury v. Madison (1803) and McCulloch v. Maryland (1819) he established the Judicial Branch as an independent power. One case in particular, named Gibbons v. Ogden (1824), displayed his†¦show more content†¦The decision finally came by John Marshall and his Supreme Court on March 2, 1824. Marshall had decided that because the Constitution declared Federal law supremacy, any law passed by Congress should be the superior force. Howe ver, only those State laws that conflicted with Federal laws and jurisdiction, therefore deemed unconstitutional, should be rejected. Therefore, States had the power to regulate their own trade, such as the southern slaves, but the Federal Government had the final say, and ultimately, supreme power. Congress henceforth could control intra and interstate commerce as the Constitution specified. Marshall s decision was none other than extraordinary. He had single-handedly prevented further debate over slavery (for the meantime, anyhow), and satisfied any contention with Federal jurisdiction. He had, once again, made a very historic decision that would see itself all the way through America s lifespan. Historically, Marshall supported Federalism, as he had in other cases such as Marbury v. Madison (1803). This would carry the country further from a loose collection of States into a National Power to be reckoned with. Also, by putting off the slavery issue again, he extended the amount o f time before there eventually would be an outbreak over the issue. He and the others knew the day would come, but they would deal with it at that later time; probably by use of arms.
